Ice model tests were conducted with two Great Lakes bulk carrier hull forms, as part of the Maritime Administration sponsored Analysis of the Maneuvering Characteristics of Great Lakes Ships in Critical Channels study. These hull forms consisted of a representative 1000' bulk carrier (Bay Shipbuilding Hull No. 718) and a modern 730' bulk carrier (Bay Shipbuilding Hull No. 715 lengthened to 730'). The purpose of the tests was to provide sufficient data for development of coefficients in the maneuvering equations of motion for ice conditions typical of the interconnecting waterways of the Great Lakes.
