The existing two-lane facility is being considered for reconstruction and construction to a four-lane rural freeway featuring control of access over its entire length, a median some 200' wide, and interchanges where needed. Environmental impacts include the benefit of faster, safer, and more efficient transportation; the possible location of archeological sites hitherto unknown to modern man; the removal of some 100 acres of land from the tax roles as a result of conversion from private to state ownership; the scarring of the desert landscape; dust and the destruction of vegetation during operations; control of access will reduce the number of entry points for man's access to the desert.
