Among advances in the uses of plastic in car body materials, the use of plastics for bumpers can be said to have been the most successful. The use of plastics for bumpers, which began in America in the 1960s has increased as a result of changes in car safety regulations. Even in Japan where there are no safety regulations, the use of plastics for bumpers has progressed since 1979 and at present virtually all passenger cars employ plastic bumpers. The author considers the trends for using plastics in bumpers by looking at bumper systems and materials, and how these will develop in the future.
