'SHINKAI 6500', a manned submersible research vehicle for Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC), dived successfully to 6 527m in sea trials and was delivered to JAMSTEC in Nov. 28, 1989. The vehicle can dive to 6 500m and explore the slopes of deep trenches around Japan. The vehicle is small in size and light in weight, has excellent maneuverability and advanced capability in its research and observation systems. The paper presents the technology and design features of 'SHINKAI 6500'.
