The purpose of this paper is to inform Coast Guard personnel of the need for service doctrine, specifically aviation doctrine. Some basic concepts and definitions concerning doctrine are discussed. Doctrine helps focus ideas and values; it is not unique to warfighting organizations. The Coast Guard has informal doctrine but needs to codify its doctrinal beliefs. The lack of formally defined ideology robs the Coast Guard of the potential to use aviation at its fullest to enhance mission execution and fulfillment. Doctrine will help the service operate more efficiency by aiding the Coast Guard define what it does and how it should be done.
