Ramp metering has proven to be an effective means of improving the operational efficiency of an over-crowded urban freeway. Freeway control systems can now prevent a breakdown under normal conditions. However, adequate control of demand under conditions such as accidents or lane blockages, is not possible. Real-time driver communications is therefore necessary to increase safety and efficiency. One method of transmitting information to the driver is through the use of commercial radio. The study discusses the results of a questionnaire survey directed toward the evaluation of commercial radio for real-time freeway communications. The conclusion is reached that commercial radio could play a vital role as part of an effective real-time traffic information system for urban freeways. (Author)
