The procedures used by three Houston radio stations in broadcasting freeway traffic information and the nature of the traffic information broadcasted were evaluated to obtain a better understanding of the application of commercial radio to freeway communications. The results of the study strongly suggest that commercial radio using current practices in the Houston area would not be satisfactory for providing real-time freeway traffic information to motorists. A major change in procedural policies would be required prior to the adoption of this system for the application that is being considered. (Author)
