The study tries to find out, in what way is it possible to influence the vehicle driver by means of traffic signs and traffic control devices in such a manner, that he appropriately adapts his speed behavior to the local situation. The investigation shows the tendency that the measures progressively determine the changes in the speed behavior when viewed individually in the order curve sign--restriction of the maximum speed--directional signs. Combinations corresponding to the order lead to positive results. If divided direction boards in bends (Chevron signs) show a continuous optical guidance of the curve alignment, extra measures have no further effect. A formulation is described for the speed behavior in the approach zone of curves which makes it possible to estimate the speed changes of any vehicle from the parameters of the spot speed distributions ahead of and in the curve. Linear relationships result thereby between the speeds ahead of and in the curve. Furthermore, deceleration sections and maximum speed reductions occurring with respect to travel interval are investigated and compared with the speed changes.
