Development possibilities of aircraft engines are reviewed. Military combat engines thrust/weight ratios twice those of engines in service today are technically possible, and on civil subsonic engines further substantial improvements in fuel efficiency are possible. For the longer term future there is the prospect of a 2nd generation supersonic transport and HOTOL. However, when (or whether) these appear depends on economic and political factors as much as on the technology.
