To respond to the need to increase speed, reliability and convenience of surface transportation link of air flight trip this study developed plans for improved transit services in the study area, examined the feasibility of those plans, and recommended means of implementing and funding. The effort was to connect the airport to the rapid transit system. The choice of extending BART(the rapid transit system) to the airport or install a separate connector system was considered. The Oakland Airport Connector System was selected as more advantageous because of lower cost and more frequent service. A comparison of the various Oakland Airport Connector Systems found a small vehicle service to be the most attractive as far as service, flexibility, and cost; but since the BART connector service is compatible with the main BART lines, the modified BART vehicle was choosen. The route chosen for the system was designed to serve the future development airport-Coliseum area. A feasibility analysis for a twenty year period proved positive. (Author)
