The basic considerations underlying the tuning of the inlet system of a multi-cylinder spark-ignition engine with inlet-manifold injection have been discussed in this paper. In the comparison of the fuel consumption of a carburetor engine and a fuel-injection engine reported here the objective was to tune the engines to give the same vehicle performance. The objective of producing the same vehicle performance when the BMEP was increased enables the back-axle ratio to be changed which in turn shifts the vehicle resistance line towards a more favorable fuel consumption on the steady-state consumption characteristic.
