FIRE II is the second of two space flight experiments designed to investigate the heating environment encountered by a body reentering the Earth's atmosphere at 25,000 miles per hour (37,000 ft/sec), a speed slightly in excess of lunar return velocity. Flight data gained from these experiments will be used as anchor points to guide laboratory experimental and theoretical investigations of reentry heat transfer, gas temperatures, and gas composition. The goal of the second launch of the FIRE spacecraft is improved quality of data compared to the first flight data (both radiative and total heating) and additional data for portions of the reentry heat pulse not provided by the first flight.
