R-4 is the fourth in a series of experiments in the Scout Reentry Heating Project. The R -4 spacecraft assembly and adapter is shown. As a part of the Space Vehicle Technology Program of NASA's Office of Advanced Research and Technology, this project is designed to investigate the heating environment encountered by a body reentering the Earth's atmosphere at 19,000 miles per hour (28,000 feet per second) - a speed slightly greater than near-earth orbital velocity.
