The development of marine radar is reviewed and prospects for its future growth discussed. Radar was first introduced on passenger ships in the 1940's and today all passenger ships and 95 percent of the cargo ships use it. The USSR has developed several marine radar systems, and today produces two outstanding units--one of them, the 'Lotsiya,' is transistorized for reliability, weighs only 90 kg, and is used on tugs, cutters, etc. Large vessels use the 'Okean' radar, which operates at both 3 and 10 cm, is capable of automatic target tracking, produces a true display, and is provided with a computer for solving piloting problems. New radar systems are produced in units which can be assembled in various combinations to meet specific design requirements, and solid state construction is used to increase their reliability.
