The effect of proposed changes in runway exit geometry and lighting on runway occupancy time was evaluated. Testing was conducted using a Boeing 727-200 simulator and a Boeing 727-100 aircraft. Subject pilots performed landings to runways equipped with the standard-design and the alternative-design exits. Exit speed was found to be affected most by pilot technique, with no advantage offered by the alternative design. Subjective evaluations by 12 pilots indicated a general preference for the standard-design exit.
