Mill expenditures for pulpwood in the Southeast increased by 3 percent, or $46 million, in 1990. The weighted average price of softwood roundwood decreased 20 cents to $55.55 per cord, while that of hardwood increased 10 cents to $41.00 per cord. Transportation of softwood roundwood pulpwood by truck decreased in 1990 for the first time in over a decade, while transportation by rail increased. The shipment of hardwood and softwood chips by rail exceeded transportation by truck by 1 percent for each species group. Recently, a large number of new chip mills have begun furnishing pulpmills with green chips and are using rail as the primary source of transportation.
