Trends in civil and military aircraft propulsion are discussed. In civil designs, increase in bypass ratio will improve fuel consumption, the exact configuration being speed-dependent, but the advance must be achieved in a cost effective way. In military designs, while the configuration may be less likely to change, major improvements in weight and cost will appear. The V/STOL aircraft will move from subsonic to supersonic. Hypersonic propulsion will require radical new concepts. Computer assistance will increasingly apply to all phases from design through to production.
