The reentry of high-speed vehicles into the atmosphere is an unusually exciting event. The typical reentry speeds of more than 20,000 feet per second ensure a spectacular meteor-like glow around a vehicle because of ionization. This brief display is a dramatic indication of some of the problems encountered by the scientists attempting to communicate with a vehicle during reentry. Stringent demands are placed on materials and structural development as well as on aerodynamic, thermochemical, and electromagnetic analyses. This report presents an overview of the problems encountered. (Author)
