For several years Lockheed has been studying operating parameters for environmental conditions which will form basis for design requirements to determine potential of manned hypersonic vehicle (MHV) using air-breathing engines as primary means of propulsion; some of basic considerations involved in design of typical manned hypersonic vehicle are presented with respect to vehicle performance, shape, weight, and size; of various air-breathing engines considered, scramjets offer promise; high probability of developmental success is found in RAM-LACE engine, liquid-air-cycle engine mounted in ramjet duct; development problems are indicated.
