The approach and touchdown phases of landing are considered first. Alternative piloting techniques are described and minimum control requirements for a given crosswind are derived from some available flight data. Following this appraisal of the landing approach, interest is transferred to the ensuing ground roll. The mechanics of the runway phase of the landing are discussed, with particular emphasis on the key role played by the aircraft's tires. For the type of aircraft being considered, excessive lateral drift at high speed, particularly on a wet runway, is shown to be the most critical factor determining sustainable crosswind. Acceptable limiting drifting characteristics are established by reference to the behaviour of an existing aircraft. (Author)
