Paper reviews aerodynamic aspects of takeoff and landing in severe crosswinds and attempts to derive design criteria by which specified crosswind landing performance may be achieved; approach and touchdown phases of landing are considered, alternative piloting techniques described, and minimum control requirements for given crosswind derived from available flight data; mechanics of runway phase of landing are discussed, with emphasis on role played by aircraft's tires; for military aircraft, excessive lateral drift at high speed, particularly on wet runway, is shown to be most critical factor determining sustainable crosswind; acceptable limiting drifting characteristics are established.
