Merchant vessel bridge/shiphandling simulators have become increasingly attractive as a possible supplement to existing training programs for maritime cadets. In the spring of 1979, the Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF) developed and coordinated the prototype cadet simulator-based training program in the United States. (For a description of the prototype program, see NMRC reports entitled Simulators for Mariner Training and Licensing Phase 2: Investigation of Simulator-Based Training for Maritime Cadets.) This document describes the conduct and evaluation of the second offering of the course in the spring of 1980. The primary research issue investigated during this second training program was the horizontal field of view requirements for a maritime cadet simulator. (Author)
