Activities of integrators, which have deeply modified the freight market, whose annual growth is predicted to be of 6.5% until the year 2000, are described. New logistics and distribution concepts allowed a large development of just in time delivery; integrators appeared in the U.S. after the air cargo deregulation act in 1977. Their advantages are quickness, reliability and service quality, enhanced by a uniform organization, use of modern telecommunication technologies and sending handling, based on the hub and spoke system, in a harmonized network. In order to react to this concurrence, Lufthansa created a 'collect and deliver' company, which supplies house to house carriage with combined ground and air transportation, and cooperates in Traxon, a global information system, with other companies involved in air cargo, such as Air France, Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific. In 1990, Lufthansa took a financial stake in DHL integrator. It is concluded that only customers can jeopardize the place of the integrators on freight market.
