The Coast Guard is planning to spend about $35 million to buy five 140-foot multimission domestic icebreakers for operations on the east coast of the United States. The need for a vessel of the size and icebreaking capability of this new craft is questionable on the east coast. GAO recommends that the Coast Guard reevaluate its overall east coast mission and match it with a vessel which will satisfy the mission need.
