The project was initiated to evaluate the Department of Motor Vehicles' short one-session group driver improvement program. The criterion measures were traffic convictions, reported traffic accidents and a combination of these called negligent operator point counts. The experimental design consisted of a selection within a given time period of 30 cases meeting the criteria of a negligent driver as defined in the California Vehicle Code. From this group, 15 cases were randomly assigned to the meeting group and 15 were refiled in the driver record file after identification as control cases. After several weeks, 244 cases had been assigned to group meetings and 196 were identified as controls. Several matching factors between groups were analyzed resulting in differences between groups on sex and age. Overall, the short group driver improvement meeting was found to be effective in reducing convictions but no differences were found on accidents.
