The effect of roughness on the frictional roll damping of full scale ships is important in the case of fouling by the growth of shells on the ship’s surface. However, for newly built and painted ships and for ships where rusting of the plating has occurred over a period of years, the frictional damping is negligible. The frictional damping coefficient is calculated from the frictional force on the rough surface of a circular cylinder with a vertical axis executing simple harmonic oscillations about its axis. These calculations are made by applying recent results from a study on the wave boundary layer at the rough bottom under a sea wave.
