In order to study the influence of different distributions of paint roughness on ship skin friction resistance a calculation method has been developed. The method is based on conformal mapping technique for describing the ship form and uses a momentum – integral method for calculation of three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer characteristics. The velocity shift due to paint roughness has been determined by experiments. Calculations for five Series 60 ships have been carried out and diagrams for practical applications are presented. Some examples of local roughness effect calculations and other possible applications of the presented method are also included.
