The channel tunnel rail link (CTRL) project is one of the largest construction engineering project in the world, involving the construction of a new high speed railway to link the channel tunnel to central London. The CTRL is developed by London and continental railways with the engineering and project management undertaken by rail link engineering, a consortium of Ove Arup, Bechtel, Halcrow and Systra. At the end of June 2003 the shafts and Stratford Box structure were substantially complete and almost 15 km of the tunnel length is driven with much of the remainder expected to be finished by the end of the year. The experiences currently being gained on CTRL clearly demonstrate that modern tunnelling system have the potential to deliver new transport corridors rapidly in urban areas with minimal disruption to the surface. It is expected that this help benefits the future development of other much needed urban schemes such as the London Crosstail project. (6 pages)
