In this paper, the modeling of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is described based on multi-field coupling theory and machine behavior in aspects of electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical characteristics are predicted. An accurate PMSM temperature field calculation method based on 3-D multi-physical field coupling FEM is proposed. The loss density and fluid velocity of each subdivision unit are obtained through solving the 3-D electromagnetic and fluid fields, which are then loaded into the thermal field analysis, and the temperature distribution is generated. A 600kW, 4200r/min PMSM with 30m3/min ventilation PMSM prototype was established. The temperature results of experiment and calculation are in good agreement, verifying the effectiveness of the analyzing method proposed in this paper. The vibration and acoustic analysis is also carried out on the high speed motor to calculate the vibration of stator shell and corresponding noise distribution. Furthermore, a synthesis of train traction power calculation model and temperature analysis method was presented. The temperature rise of PMSM can thus be predicted under real operation conditions.
