The Enhanced Railway Safety System seeks to protect railroads by detecting probable risks and triggering automated alarm if the system is in any kind of danger. The system monitors by tracking the barriers and threats to the railway due to any obstacles on track using sensors, micro controllers and wireless communication. Instant alerts for both the train operators and train passengers are generated and emergency brakes are applied when a decision algorithm recognizes obstacles or threats. The prototype was field tested with the system achieving detection rates over ninety percent with a detection time of less than 2 seconds. It was proficient in tracking obstructions and relayed this information in real-time to the controlling unit. This automatic system reduces the manual input needed and reduces the chances of human error or equipment failures causing accidents. The project provides safety with little displacement of existing structures and can be executed in many railway networks. In future, the developments may be in the areas of improving algorithms for detection and utilizing deep learning more in predicting safety.
