To diagnose winding faults within an electric multiple unit (EMU) traction transformer conveniently without adding external equipment, this paper proposed a method for identifying winding faults based on voltage and current signals of the traction transformer. First, this paper proved that the relationship between $\sum$i (the sum of input and output current) and $\Delta$u (the difference of input and output voltage) is an elliptic equation. The major and minor axis of the ellipse, divided by current respectively, have been proved theoretically that they are only related to the internal parameters of the traction transformer, therefore, it is regarded as two indicators of winding fault diagnosis. The influence of traction rectifier on voltage and current signals of traction transformer is considered by establishing a joint simulation model consisting of a traction transformer and a traction rectifier. Four different states of primary and secondary windings of traction transformer have been simulated respectively: normal, inter-turn short circuit, radial displacement, and axial displacement. Simulations are carried out under different grid voltage and external load. Finally, the characteristics of proposed indicators under different faults have been analyzed. The results show that the proposed method is effective and sensitive on winding faults of traction transformer.
