The evolutionary algorithm for network-wide real-time optimization of traffic signal control GALOP is presented. It optimizes the signal timing plans of all traffic lights within a road network. All control parameters - cycle length, offsets, phase sequences and start-times of phase transitions - can be optimized simultaneously. GALOP has been integrated into the adaptive network control system BALANCE, replacing the former hill-climbing algorithm. It was put into operation for the first time in June 2008.
