This paper focuses on the architecture, design development, analysis, breadboarding, packaging, and performance of a combined Remote Keyless Entry and Immobilization (RKE/Im) system for automotive application. A unique algorithm incorporated in the key produces a "rolling code" with which to electronically authenticate the user; providing a dual level deterrent for vehicle content theft and vehicle theft. A brief description of the Challenge-Response rolling code methodology is given. Trade-offs necessary for the system's wireless ultra-high frequency (UHF) and very-low frequency (VLF) mixed signal implementation in silicon are discussed. The system's mixed signal processing incorporates CMOS logic, bipolar/MOS analog circuitry, and DMOS driver technologies.
