This paper provides a new optimal adaptive cruise controller (ACC) for regulating the distance inter-vehicles. The proposed approach is based on a super-twisting sliding mode control. The Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA) was applied to identify the controller optimal parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is examined through a speed scenario frequently encountered on the roads. The suggested control structure offers a high tracking accuracy.
