LiNbO/sub 3/ electro optical modulators are attractive for high-speed and long-haul optical fiber transmission systems. To make a broader bandwidth LiNbO/sub 3/ modulator, it is very important to optimize the modulator structure to achieve a low driving voltage under velocity-matching and impedance-matching conditions. A cross-sectional view of the proposed ridge-type LiNbO/sub 3/ Mach Zehnder modulator with relatively thicker co-planar waveguide (CPW) electrodes (normal-type) is shown.
