The Advanced Mobile Information System (AMIS) is one of the six subsystems for the Universal Traffic Management Systems (UTMS), which totally manages and controls traffic flow for safe and smooth road traffic condition. AMIS is the core of UTMS and it utilizes a two-way optical communication using infrared rays between the infrastructure and vehicles carrying IR detectors. Using these functions, AMIS can measure the travel time and provide each driver with an optimum route, enabling drivers to avoid traffic jams and guaranteeing ease of mobility within the road network. A UTMS experiment was conducted in 1994 in order to evaluate the validity of this system.<>
