Designing a traction motor for an Electric Vehicle (EV) with flexible torque-speed characteristics is crucial, specifically when there is a need for a wide operational speed range and high starting torque. With an electronic Pole-Changing Induction Machine (e-PCIM), the number of poles can be changed based on the operating condition, and the desired torque-speed characteristics is obtained. This paper introduces different multiphase concentrated windings capable of electronic pole-changing by adjusting the phase current excitation sequence that leads to multiple rotational magnetic fields (RMF) with different number of poles. The operation principle and electromagnetic characteristics are evaluated using analytical equations with linear core material at different conditions. Furthermore, the performance analysis is provided utilizing the finite element analysis (FEA) for various types to consider the saturation effect. Finally, using the test platform for a 5-phase prototype, the concept is evaluated, and the experimental results confirm the operational principle.
