Recent trends in Rail traction industry requires high power density equipment to be mounted on the locomotives to cater to the increasing demands both for goods traffic and passenger traffic in India. At the same time, Harmonics generated by the locomotives on to the overhead line should be mitigated to increase the reliability of the safety equipment near the OHE line. Major component of Traction converter is the DC link capacitor which has both space and cost implications. The focus of this article is to study the feed forward control in view of increasing the power density of the traction converters. Phase shifted modulation (PSM) for reduction of harmonics generated by multi converter front ends has also been studied. Power density has been dealt in view of reducing the capacitance required by the converter which will reduce the size and cost of the converter.
