The paper presents an approach for modelling and cost-benefit analysis for deploying proton exchange membrane fuel cell-battery (PEMFCB) hybrid energy system to run locomotives. Firstly, a model for designing the PEMFCB hybrid energy system is formulated such that it can provide similar tractive efforts as required in the diesel engine locomotives running in Indian Railway. Then, an exhaustive search is carried out to determine the rating requirement for the different components of the PEMFCB hybrid energy system. Finally, the dynamic performances of the PEMFCB hybrid energy system on a given drive cycle is verified using Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR). The simulation is done using the data of the locomotive class WDM-7 running in Indian Railway.
