Based on the recent progress in the quality of automotive-proven sensors (stereo cameras, radar) and the constant algorithmic improvements, novel driver assistance systems become available that allow for actively preventing or mitigating collisions, e.g., by automatic braking and steering. Along with the growing functional potential of these systems the challenge of providing the required functional reliability is growing. The contribution proposes a systematic approach for handling the sensor- and system-immanent uncertainties. The proposed methods are applied on a state-of-the-art collision mitigation system that allows, e.g., an automatically commanded emergency braking even in highly dynamic situations.
