It is argued that equipment susceptibility standards need much development before they offer adequate assurance of EMC for aircraft systems. Evidence is offered that the protection afforded by aircraft fuselages may not be as high as previously supposed, and that this has implications for susceptibility limits. The problems of generating high field strengths below 200 MHz are discussed and improvements to parallel plate transmission lines outlined. The question of repeatability of test methods is mentioned and illustrated by the location of monitoring aerials when testing to MIL-STD-461A Test RS03. Finally, the need is emphasised to continue international cooperation, both to ensure standarisation of test methods and hence minimization of costs, and also to achieve interoperability of systems between users.
