In this article, performance evaluation of permanent magnet (PM)-assisted synchronous reluctance (Syn-REL) machines under faults for a high-performance application is presented. The performances of a dual three-phase 30-slot/four-pole ferrite magnet-assisted Syn-REL machine under different winding and inverter faults are investigated. It is shown that the 30-slot four-pole PM-assisted machine becomes unbalanced irrespective of the faults, and the torque output becomes limited. The root cause of unbalanced machine behavior during fault is quantified and presented. The output torque of the 30-slot four-pole motor under faults is substantially lower even with considerably lower braking torque. The different torque components, machine parameters, braking torque, and demagnetization performances are presented using 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA), and later, all the simulation results are validated with extensive experimental results. A fault management strategy is also proposed to improve the fault state performances.
