Today’s electrical grid suffers from several problems, from being old, not clean (more than half of our electricity is generated from coal), and not efficient enough, to name a few. Electric vehicles (EVs) can be considered part of this smart grid environment, providing a cleaner environment, efficient transportation, and grid support capabilities. The effective management of EV charging infrastructure is crucial to the EVs ecosystem especially with the high penetration of EVs. This paper presents a centralized vehicle charging control algorithm for better management of electric vehicles considering power grid impact and user comfort. The advantage of the proposed framework is that it is scalable, considers grid abnormalities to manage vehicle charging and routing, and is distributed to accommodate a large number of vehicles. Results show that optimization has a significant impact on improving grid efficiency and stability.
