Bandwidth-based traffic signal coordination can effectively improve vehicle travel speed and reduce traffic emissions. This paper presents two bandwidth optimization models which can solve the traffic signal coordination problems of passenger cars and buses in an unclosed traffic network. The first model can maximize the bandwidths under the situation that all intersections in an unclosed traffic network operate with the split phasing. The second model can maximize the bandwidths under the situation that some intersections in an unclosed traffic network operate with the split phasing and some operate with the NEMA phasing. The common cycles, offsets and phase sequences can be optimized simultaneously by the presented models. Moreover, the first and second presented models are formulated as mixed-integer linear programming problems and can be solved by the branch and bound algorithm. Finally, a numerical example is designed to verify the correctness and the practicality of the presented models. A new index for verifying the correctness of the presented models is proposed and the results of the index indicate that the presented models are correct. The traffic signal coordination plans yielded for the numerical example demonstrate that the presented models can simultaneously provide progression bands for passenger cars and buses in the unclosed traffic network.
