We envision the soon-to-be-available future when connected vehicles (CVs) are tightly connected to edge and cloud intelligence and are given a microscopic and macroscopic lane level guidance to avoid any disruption in their mobility experience. In this study, we introduce a novel framework that can measure the impact of CV path planning on the metrics, fairness and society friendliness. Our case studies highlight how CV path planning undermines the fairness on travel time savings of all CV drivers and society friendliness in terms of the safety of non-CV drivers. Lastly, our recommendations demonstrate that the proposed hierarchical architecture with a low latency and the game-theoretically formulated queue management and lane changing assistance enhance the fairness and society friendliness, respectively.
