An object detecting apparatus is provided which includes relative speed obtaining means for obtaining a relative speed of a nearby object, relative acceleration calculating means for calculating a relative acceleration of the object from the relative speed, and limiting means for setting an upper limit of the relative acceleration when a given condition where a degree of reliability of a detected value of the relative speed is expected to be low is met and then also limiting the value of the relative acceleration using the upper limit when the given condition is met. The object detecting apparatus is capable of executing a control task accurately using a value of the relative acceleration calculated based on a detected value of the relative speed.
