To provide a vehicle control device capable of controlling travel of a vehicle to change lanes appropriately when a plurality of spaces allowing the vehicle to change lanes exist.SOLUTION: A vehicle control method comprises the steps of: specifying a first possible space allowing an own vehicle to perform a lane change on the basis of an inter-vehicle distance between a preceding vehicle and an approaching vehicle, a speed of the preceding vehicle, and a speed of the approaching vehicle; specifying a second possible space allowing the own vehicle to perform the lane change on the basis of an inter-vehicle distance between the approaching vehicle and a following vehicle, the speed of the approaching vehicle, and a speed of the following vehicle; performing evaluation on the specified first possible space and the specified second possible space; and controlling travel of the own vehicle to change a lane to an adjacent lane on the basis of a result of the evaluation.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
