PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a hybrid electric vehicle so as to appropriately improve fuel economy.SOLUTION: A vehicle control unit (100) comprises: determination means (103) of determining whether a charging cost that represents the fuel consumption (F) of an internal combustion engine (ENG) required to accumulate unit electric energy in a rechargeable battery (500) is lower than an engine cost that represents the fuel consumption (H) of the internal engine required to output unit travel power without using the power of a rotating electric machine (MG1); control means (101) of controlling a hybrid electric vehicle so that the travel mode of the hybrid electric vehicle is set to an electric mode when the charging cost is lower than the engine cost and so that the travel mode is set to an engine mode when the charging cost is higher than the engine cost; and correction means (104) of correcting the charging cost so that the charging cost is close to the engine cost when the state in which the charging cost and the engine cost differ by a specified value (P1, P2) or more continues for time exceeding specified time (Q).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
