PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the voltage surge at turn-off and effectively reduce the loss amounts of elements throughout the entire traveling sections during high-speed traveling.SOLUTION: A power conversion apparatus for a railway vehicle 10 comprises: a converter 18 which converts AC power, supplied from an AC overhead wire 11, into DC power; and an inverter 21 which converts the DC power output from the converter 18 into AC power by way of switching operation of a plurality of insulated gate transistors, and outputs the AC power to an AC motor 20 for driving the associated railway vehicle. A positive side gate voltage applied to gates of the insulated gate transistors configuring the inverter 21 is set higher in a high-speed range determined by characteristics of the AC motor 20 than in other speed ranges.

    【課題】高速走行の場合に走行区間全体でターンオフ時の電圧跳ね上がりを抑えつつ、素子損失量を効果的に低減する。【解決手段】鉄道車両用電力変換装置10は、交流架線11から供給される交流電力を直流電力に変換するコンバータ18と、コンバータ18の出力した直流電力を複数の絶縁ゲートトランジスタのスイッチング動作により直流−交流電力変換を行い対応する鉄道車両駆動用の交流電動機20に出力するインバータ21と、を備えている。交流電動機20の特性により定まる高速域において、インバータ21を構成している絶縁ゲートトランジスタのゲートに印加する正側ゲート電圧を他の速度域よりも高く設定する。【選択図】図1
