A wheel retaining device comprises multiple threaded wheel studs (12) and corresponding wheel nuts (17). Each stud (12) has an axial bore extending longitudinally into the stud (12) from its distal end (18) and a lateral bore (19) extending radially into the stud (12) through its threaded surface (15) to intersect with the longitudinal bore (16). A locking pin (24) is disposed within and can move longitudinally along the longitudinal bore. Ball bearings (33,34) are located within the lateral bore (19). Each wheel nut (17) has a threaded surface engageable with the threaded surface (15) of the stud (12), and an elongate recess (23). In a first configuration, the locking pin (24) contacts a ball bearing (33), causing the other ball bearing (34) to extend into the recess (23) of the wheel nut (17). In a second configuration, the locking pin (24) is displaced inwardly along the longitudinal bore (16) relative to the first configuration. The locking pin (24) is profiled so that in this configuration the first ball bearing (33) can move partially into the longitudinal bore (16), allowing the second ball bearing to move fully into the lateral bore (19) and out of the elongate recess (23) of the wheel nut (17).
